Health Minister Kiril Ananiev announced yesterday (2 February) his intention to change the entire model of functioning of the country’s health system. He promised to conduct the most comprehensive reforms in this area since 1999 when Bulgaria introduced the current system of health care financing.
“Today, we are committed to developing a new model for the functioning, management and financing of medical care within a few months.” Our health care system is ill, it needs treatment, but for so many years nobody has written the recipe for this treatment, “said Ananiev.
Prior to becoming Minister of Health, Ananiev was Deputy Minister of Finance for many years since 1997. He is one of the few experts who have always remained in position, no matter the change of power in Sofia. The reason is the enormous role he played in the drafting of the state budget.
Ananiev announced in parliament that the current model for financing the system is “completely exhausted” and cannot be restored by temporary measures. He reminded that every year the system is becoming more and more expensive and does not offer better quality and people are still dissatisfied,
It is expected that the reform will be proposed by the end of the summer and will come into force from the beginning of 2019.
Ananiev refused to comment on his ideas. The current GERB government and the United Patriot nationalist coalition have not promised a comprehensive health reform, but only a financial stabilization of the current model.
